Product Description The inimitable Richard Jury returns in a thrilling tale of mystery, madness, and mistaken identity
Three months have passed since Richard Jury was left bereft and guilt- ridden after his lover's tragic auto accident, and he is now more wary than ever. He is deeply suspicious when requested on a case far out of his jurisdiction in an outlying village where a young woman has been murdered behind the local pub. The only witness is the establishment's black cat, who gives neither crook nor clue as to the girl's identity or her killer's.
Identifying the girl becomes tricky when she's recognized as both the shy local librarian and a posh city escort, and Jury must use all his wits and intuition to determine the connection to subsequent escort murders. Meanwhile, Jury's nemesis, Harry Johnson, continues to goad Jury down a dangerous path. And Johnson, along with the imperturbable dog Mungo, just may be the key to it all.
Written with Martha Grimes's trademark insight and grace, The Black Cat signals the thrilling return of her greatest character. The superintendent is a man possessed of prodigious analytical gifts and charm, yet vulnerable in the most perplexing ways.

Bring back the whole crew! July 28, 2010 robbie marshall I'm afraid Grimes has lost her touch. Instead of developing an intricate plot and involving all the fun characters with snappy dialogue, she goes off on strange tangents with weird cognizant, telepathic cats and dogs. Maybe this is okay in a Tom Robbins novel, but not enjoyable in a British mystery. There was not enough of Melrose Plant in his undercover assignments and his and Jury's comraderie seems lacking. They don't even seem to like each other much; or why hang out if you're snapping or giving orders? I agree that Harry Johnson is a drag and hope she can review her previous successes and return to the formula her fans have enjoyed in the past. With writers like Jacqueline Winspear, Charles Todd, Christopher Fowler, Peter Robinson, and Deborah Crombie continuing to provide entertaining works, Martha Grimes better ramp up her game...
Very Disappointed July 21, 2010 A. M. Foxworth (Mississippi) The last three Richard Jury books have not been very good, and The Black Cat was by far the worst. I miss the mysteries that Richard Jury used to solve. I miss the characters of Long Pid. They appear in the Black Cat, but only briefly. If this continues, the Ms. Grimes should retire Inspector Jury.
Martha is turning into an old cat lady? July 12, 2010 F Steele (Cape Cod) I have read all the Jury novels (Not a fan of non Jury books) and this may be my last - the dog and cat dialogs drove me nuts and distracted from the story. Nothing was revealed by them and Jury's bothering Johnson had nothing to do with the plot. I too miss the old cast. While I enjoyed some new developments over the years with Grimes making the characters more real and up to date - particularly the book featuring Robert Plant music and even sexing up the characters; in this book the mystery seemed to be an afterthought - the solution garbled and rushed at the end. Maybe that is why this book debuted on Amazon at a far lesser price than similar books...
If I wanted a cat mystery I could find many other authors - these started as old English cosies which were updated as the years went by...The characters stopped being developed --lost the formula and the new one is not working. :-(
Martha Grimes' decline sadly continues July 11, 2010 Karl (Bozeman, MT USA) One cannot review The Black Cat without talking about the prior two books in the Richard Jury series, The Old Wine Shades and Dust.
Until these volumes, Martha Grimes had constructed really interesting mysteries that flowed around mostly amusing interactions between a well-established cast of characters that readers have come to know and enjoy spending time with. Apparently, Grimes is bored with her formula, as she introduced the enigmatic but utterly boring Harry Johnson in The Old Wine Shades, kept him through Dust, and inflicts him upon us again in The Black Cat with zero logic for his being present other than for Jury to be able to get some great wine for free and visit with the dog Mungo. Mungo, in this volume, now communicates with a cat in perfect English telepathy for page after page, bringing my annoyance with Grimes to its peak. The usual ancillary characters, which actually do speak English, are almost completely absent.
If you do read the book, you'll note that not just the soles of some shoes are red. There are red herrings as well.
After three marginal books in a row, this is my last Martha Grimes purchase.
Another hit, Martha! July 3, 2010 Bawlmer Sue Still lovin' Richard and Melrose and waiting for the Masterpiece Mystery series!!
I have to say I'm getting a little fed up with Harry Johnson, though - I wish he'd make that fatal mistake and go away, so Richard could take Mungo home to keep Stone (and Carol Anne and Mrs. W) company.
I can't decide if I want these guys ever to work out their love lives or not. Any votes?
