Product Description

Bodyguard Celia Graves has definitely accepted her share of weird assignments, both human and supernatural. But her newest job takes the cake. Guarding a Prince from terrorists and religious fundamentalists is hard enough, but it seems like the entire supernatural world is after this guy too. When she is betrayed by those she is employed to help, and everything goes horribly wrong, Celia wakes to find herself transformed.

Neither human nor vampire, Celia has become an Abomination-something that should not exist-and now both human and supernatural alike want her dead. With the help of a few loyal friends-a sexy mage, a powerful werewolf, and a psychic cop-Celia does her best to stay alive. On the run from her enemies, Celia must try to discover who is behind her transformation-before it-s too late.

4 out of 5 stars A fast, action-packed read!   September 6, 2010
Alexia (Northern NJ USA)
This one was recommended to me by my favorite online bookstore, and I'm glad they did as I hadn't heard of it before! It's a little unusual as while Celia lives in a world with magic, she is a human who survives using her wits and weapons. Don't get too many humans as main characters, so this made a nice change. Of course, nothing in urban fantasy is what it seems...

Am learning about several new species, myths, and legends in the books I've read lately, which I love! Had never heard of an Abomination before. This isn't a spoiler as it's mentioned in the book blurb, but suffice it to say that our plain vanilla human doesn't stay plain vanilla for long.

Celia can take care of herself, as she wouldn't have lasted long as a bodyguard if she couldn't. But after being betrayed and attacked, she's on the run from those who would shoot first and ask questions later, and can use all the help she can get! Doesn't hurt that one of those she turns to for help is her ex-love, and that she still has feelings for him. Hmmmm...wonder if the sparks will start flying?

This was a fast, action-packed read! Interesting characters, decent plot, and a few surprise twists along the way. There's a whole backstory concerning Celia and her sister and I'd like to learn more about, as it's only mentioned in passing without too many details. I found the plot a little confusing at times and didn't really understand why certain things happened as they did, but overall I really enjoyed this book.

5 out of 5 stars Love it   August 27, 2010

Great new series. I love the characters and the setting. I didnt want to put it down once I started. Looking forward to more stories with Celia and the great cast of characters she is surrounded by.

5 out of 5 stars A great ride, loved it!   August 7, 2010
J. Lynch
In my head, I'm doing a fangirl squee because I loved this book! I know I say this a lot (mostly to my students) but this story was a total ride! The action moved quickly, the characters were great, the world building awesome, I even started clenching my jaw at the final chase scene because I was so into it and feeling the stress.
Blood Song is set in a world where magic, demons, vampires, and warrior priests are common place. The reader learns more about the world as the story moves along, but in a way that doesn't leave you confused. Vampires are a menace and you can pick up your anti-bat supplies at the local drug store. You can go to your local mage to put wards around your business or home, you can find out about your future, or go to a magical therapist to help you deal with traumas. It was great!
Celia Graves is a body guard you grudgingly takes a job to guard a prince. She didn't like the retainer who came hire her or the lack of information. But hey, the money was really good, and the job could be very good for her business. The job, while distasteful, was just a few hours away from being finished when the strip club the prince was at was about to be raided by the cops. The prince, who had recently allied himself with his country's religious fundamentalists (the religion was never specified), could not afford the bad press, so Celia and the other body guards hustle him out the back entrance. As they were exiting, they were attacked by vampires. During the fight, Celia notices that the "Prince" changes forms (turns out he was a demon or at least a demon spawn) and traps the body guards in the ally to die. The others are killed, but one of the bats starts the spell to turn Celia. The spell wasn't completed due to a timely rescue, and Celia becomes an Abomination - a human with vampire traits. Celia gets fangs, the glowy eyes and pale skin (also kinda glowy), the speed, the healing, and a few other inconveniences. Because she looks so much like a vampire, people freak out, even in the middle of the day. I gotta say, those were some of my favorite bits. The corner shop attendant that freaks out and douses Celia in holy water - it cracked me up. Because she does the law abiding thing and informs the police of what has happened, the cops, the FBI, and the princes' government get involved. Circumstances conspire against Celia and she has three days to find out what happened, figure out who is still trying to kill her, and not end up locked away in a state facility because of her Abomination status.
I loved that Celia came with baggage, was strong and good at her job, but was still socially capable. Yes she had a short fuse, but she could still work with people. ( I've been getting really tired of kick-ass heroines with zero people skills, it's getting old.) the other characters in the book were great and well written. There was a revelation toward the end that was a bit corny, but I can work with it.

5 out of 5 stars A great new kick-ass urban-fantasy heroine!   August 6, 2010

Beautiful and incredibly tough, bodyguard Celia Graves lives in a world much like ours, except it is filled with supernatural creatures who are living openly among humans, some of whom have magical powers, too, including innate psychic powers and powers granted by being a witch or "mage." Other creatures making an appearance include ghosts, demons, werewolves, and vampires.

Celia has always seen herself as a "plain vanilla human," but as a highly paid bodyguard, she compensates for that by great training, a whole lot of advanced planning, and arming herself with expensive magically-enhanced clothing, equipment and weapons. Unfortunately, though all her skill and preparation helps keep her from getting killed outright, it doesn't entirely save her when an assignment guarding a Eastern European prince goes badly wrong. Her co-bodyguard is massacred and Celia is bitten but not killed by a vampire. As a result, she becomes part-vampire and part-human, a rarity called an "Abomination" by her society.

Celia is horrified by her situation, but even more concerned that it will ultimately get her locked up by human authorities--a fate in some ways worse than death for her due to an experience in her childhood of being kidnapped and tortured. If she ends up imprisoned by the human authorities keeping a watch on her, she will probably never get out, if they don't outright execute her due to her new super strength and lust for human blood causing her to kill someone. But that isn't her only problem. She is also being tracked by shadowy connections of her former prince client as well as multiple powerful vampires, including her maker.

Celia needs quiet and time to adjust to her new condition, but she doesn't have that luxury. It will be a miracle if she manages to even survive.

This is a compelling start to a new series. Celia is a strong protagonist and her situation is unique and enthralling. The story's take on vampires is particularly interesting, with an approach to their lore that is a solid combination of several main trends in handling vampires of the past 10 years or so. There are also multiple potential love interests in the story, including a gorgeous werewolf and Celia's ex-fiancé, a powerful mage, but no actual on-stage romance in this particular book. The action is constant and the book is so well written, it is a "couldn't put it down" read.

I highly recommend Blood Song to anyone who loves urban fantasy, particularly with vampires and werewolves in it.

5 out of 5 stars Blood Song   August 4, 2010

First let me just say the cover drawing reminds me of Lisa Marie Presley for some reason. Anyway, my review is based purely on entrainment factor alone. This book consistently kept my interest and attention. It's very hard for me to enjoy a story when religious relics are the focal point for repelling "evil". However, the author did a fabulous job of reeling me into this story from the start and after a while those relics didn't much matter to me.

Sirens aren't included in many urban fantasy series, so having Sirens involved in this novel was a treat. Actually I haven't seen anything to do with Sirens since Charmed went off the air.

Imagine a world where creatures of nightmares are all out of the closet and roaming the city streets. Now imagine these creatures aren't even house-broken and tamed. They are ferocious and don't even know the meaning of civility. Society is gripped with so much fear that bottles of holy water blessed by "true believers" are flying off the shelves. Priests are no longer regular ordain folks but actually trained warriors.

However, exciting this story was, it was not without its faults. Such as the focus of the story building up to a huge finale, only to have it change mid-stream and wound up making the main plot feel anticlimactic and after the fact. Regardless of its imperfections, this book had plenty of nail-biting suspense and action, and I thoroughly enjoyed this read.

I recommend this book to dark urban fantasy readers and look forward to the next book in this new series Siren Song due out 9/28/10.
