Product Description
A sensation across Europe-millions of copies sold A spellbinding amalgam of murder mystery, family saga, love story, and financial intrigue. It's about the disappearance forty years ago of Harriet Vanger, a young scion of one of the wealthiest families in Sweden . . . and about her octogenarian uncle, determined to know the truth about what he believes was her murder. It's about Mikael Blomkvist, a crusading journalist recently at the wrong end of a libel case, hired to get to the bottom of Harriet's disappearance . . . and about Lisbeth Salander, a twenty-four-year-old pierced and tattooed genius hacker possessed of the hard-earned wisdom of someone twice her age-and a terrifying capacity for ruthlessness to go with it-who assists Blomkvist with the investigation. This unlikely team discovers a vein of nearly unfathomable iniquity running through the Vanger family, astonishing corruption in the highest echelons of Swedish industrialism-and an unexpected connection between themselves. It's a contagiously exciting, stunningly intelligent novel about society at its most hidden, and about the intimate lives of a brilliantly realized cast of characters, all of them forced to face the darker aspects of their world and of their own lives.

Amazon.com Review
Amazon Best of the Month, September 2008: Once you start The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, there's no turning back. This debut thriller--the first in a trilogy from the late Stieg Larsson--is a serious page-turner rivaling the best of Charlie Huston and Michael Connelly. Mikael Blomkvist, a once-respected financial journalist, watches his professional life rapidly crumble around him. Prospects appear bleak until an unexpected (and unsettling) offer to resurrect his name is extended by an old-school titan of Swedish industry. The catch--and there's always a catch--is that Blomkvist must first spend a year researching a mysterious disappearance that has remained unsolved for nearly four decades. With few other options, he accepts and enlists the help of investigator Lisbeth Salander, a misunderstood genius with a cache of authority issues. Little is as it seems in Larsson's novel, but there is at least one constant: you really don't want to mess with the girl with the dragon tattoo. --Dave Callanan

I recommend this international bestseller to all who like intellectual crime thrillers, and who want to share Larsson's war against violence and racism.

4 out of 5 stars No tough cops or cocky PIs   September 10, 2010

At last a mystery (or thriller if you prefer) that doesn't feature a worn out tough cop from central casting or a cocky PI (from the same). The strange team of a temporarily defrocked magazine publisher and a socially undeveloped hacker with photographic memory is an interesting and refreshing approach to solving an equally strange crime.

What makes this book even more interesting is that it's from a Swedish author whose characters don't use the predictable approach to solving a mystery. The fresh writing style avoids the usual cliches of the genre.

Being set in Sweden, the reader is not bored with the clap trap description and dialog of New York, LA, Detroit, Miami and all the other usual mystery/thriller sites. The only problem with the locale is trying to pronounce the Swedish names. However this is easily remidied by simply not trying to pronounce them!

For something different, captivating and fresh it's worth your (reading) time.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing   September 9, 2010

I was truly disappointed in the book. I thought that since they were making it into a movie, it would be pretty good. But, this was not the case.

I found the first chapters interesting, but then it got very boring, and I couldn't tell who they were talking about and who was doing the talking. I still can't figure out why they called it "The girl with the dragon tatoo", when she really didn't have that much to do with the book.

I've seen the trailors for the movie, and it looks very exciting. I hope it's better than this book. I was planning on buying the next two books, but I have since changed my mind. I'm glad I didn't buy them before I read this book.

5 out of 5 stars 1st in a great series   September 9, 2010

Don't go by the first few chapters of this book. I almost didn't keep reading it because of the financial/political background of Sweden in the beginning but I kept telling myself it had to get better because of the great reviews it has. Once the story started, I could not put it down. The same with the two sequels. I was sorry when I finished the third in the series, I want to keep reading about Salander & Blomkvist, I feel like they were a part of my life.
