5 out of 5 stars Excellent Leash   August 31, 2010
Dave (Boston, Ma)
This, along with the other Flexi leashes I've owned, have been of excellent quality. It retracts well, the "stopper" works well, and is comfortable to hold. The bonus of the tape (as opposed to cord) is that it's easy to see any potential tears, cuts, chew spots, etc so you can replace before the dog yanks and rips the leash all the way and runs off. At 26', it's a nice long cord that allows your dog some freedom to run around.

A few cons:
1. The retract is a bit too strong for smaller dogs. I have an 11 pound dachsund and I wouldn't get this leash for a dog much smaller than that. Flexi doesn't make, or I can't find, a 26 foot tape leash for smaller dogs, so I got the big one. Which leads me to my next point...
2. It's a BIG leash. If you're petite and/or have small hands, it may get a bit uncomfortable after a while.

I'm not going to knock the product for my two cons since it is made for big dogs (it's like getting a 65" TV and complaining the screen is too big) just a couple things to keep in mind, but probably not the best choice for your grandmother and her 7 pound chihuaha.

All in all, I love the leash and I would definitely get it again!

5 out of 5 stars Great!   August 14, 2010

Great Leash, I've had two Flexi leashes in the past and they lasted about 10 years. So far, so good on this one too. I like the tape vs. the rope, it seems to wind in better.

4 out of 5 stars Pay now or pay later   August 14, 2010
Everett H. Bigwood Jr. (New Market, VA USA)
Ours lasted eight months. Even though we have a 20-lb. beagle, we purchased the 'large dog' model for comfort and durability's sake. There's an 'all-belt' model that retails here for under $60 that we'll go with for replacement, reasoning that a once-and-for-all (or at least for a few years) purchase now is better economy than shelling out $25-$30 yearly.

4 out of 5 stars Comparison to Petmate Walkabout   August 10, 2010
C. G. King (Horse Country, VA USA)
I had a retractable leash I liked but wanted a second one and this longer leash length appealed to me. Having used both now for a couple of months, I find I prefer the Walkabout leash by a narrow margin, but this one works well too.

I wanted a leash to keep in the house for when our walks started from there, but wanted one I could keep in the garage also. Plus if one got damaged or broken I'd have a backup.

The first point which favors this leash is the longer cord (23' over 16' for the Walkabout). This is great when I'm walking my pup in my quiet neighborhood or an open field since he has more freedom to chase the odd butterfly or search for the perfect spot to go, however that can also be a negative if space is limited like in the city or next to a busy road. It's also a problem where there are obstacles that can get things all tangled up.

My puppy has pulled both leashes out of my relaxed hand when I wasn't expecting him to take off. This leash is a little bigger and heavier than the Walkabout, which scared the him even more as he pulled it around behind him clattering and bouncing.

When this leash retracts it is quieter than the other one. It still retracts quickly but the sound is more muffled. The Walkabout leash startled both of us a couple of times when it retracted fast. Both leashes seem to be about equal as far as effort needed to pull the cord out. My Jack Russell puppy is small and far prefers the retractable leashes to a standard type (as do I) but he doesn't want to be constantly tugged on and this one seems to tug on him a little more than the other.

The finish on this hand unit is slightly textured where the Walkabout is slick and thus looks cheaper, but for whatever reason, the less slick, textured finish, plus the larger handhold, seems to encourage the extended portion of the leash to more easily tangle around the unit when it's lying about. Usually I notice it and can correct it, but I was very frustrated on one occasion to hook up the puppy without realizing the leash had fallen through the handhold. Now, you wouldn't think that would make a huge difference, but it sure did. We were going to the kennel and he was super excited to investigate, so pulling hard and fast. I wanted to retract the leash and lock it, but couldn't get it to come back, so although I pulled him in manually, I couldn't lock the leash in a short position as the cord was dangling loose. It wasn't malfunctioning, just not happy about the indirect position of the cord. That was user error, of course, but the Walkabout leash has never had a similar problem. I guess with the slick finish and smaller handhold, the leash end is less likely to fall through.

Anyway, I like both the leashes and use both and the longer cord length can be a real benefit for the puppy sometimes, but overall I favor the Walkabout. I'd say this leash is better for a slightly bigger dog than my 7 lb puppy or for an owner who needs a bigger handhold (and is more careful than I about making sure the leash isn't tangled before hooking it to the dog's collar.)

4 out of 5 stars Great for the price!   August 9, 2010
D. Todt (Honolulu, HI)
I've taken the last one to the beach almost everyday for 4 months, in the water, on the sand, it held up well for a while. Forgot to rinse it off one day, the last day it worked. I bought this replacement and hope to keep it from breaking this time!
Great for the price!
